LinkedIn shows your profile photo as a circle in almost every place it appears: your profile, the feed, search results, comments. The file you upload is square, so the corners get cut away. Most photos that look wrong on LinkedIn are not badly shot, they are badly cropped for a circle.
Upload a square image. If you hand LinkedIn a landscape photo it will crop to a square first and then to a circle, and you have no say in what survives.
Give the head room. The circle removes roughly the corners of the square, so anything close to an edge disappears. Keep your head and shoulders inside the middle, with visible space above your hair.

Go bigger than you think. The photo is displayed small, but on a retina screen a small display still needs a lot of pixels. Around 800 x 800 or more stays sharp everywhere and costs you nothing.
Watch the background. At the size LinkedIn actually renders, a busy background turns into noise around your head. A single flat colour reads cleanly at every size, which is also why teams that use one background look organised rather than coordinated by accident.
If more than one person is doing this at the same time, do it once and do it together. The same background, the same crop and the same export set for everyone takes about as long as doing one person carefully.
